Grid Manager at EDF Renewables

I am Professional Engineer and hold a bachelor’s degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from the University of Johannesburg. In my 9 years of experience I have been directly involved in the integration of more than 500MW of Renewable Power Plants in the South African grid, both Solar PV and Wind.

My Career started at Eskom and I spent 5 years working in the Transmission Grid Planning Business Unit. As Grid Planning Engineer I was responsible for Transmission Grid optimisation and strengthening, ensuring the safe and reliable operation of the network, and the integration of new Generation and Load customers into the network. My time at Eskom resulted in professional competency in all project development and planning aspects of the Integrated Power System (IPS).

I then moved into the renewable energy environment, working as a Grid Connection Engineer at Enel Green Power. I was responsible for ensuring that the Renewable Power Plants(RPPs) are integrated into the grid and remain compliant with Grid Code requirements and standards of the respective country. I spent 2 years at Enel Green Power were I became well knowledgeable with the RPPs, Grid Connection Processes and Grid Codes of various countries.

I then joined juwi Renewable Energies in late 2018 and I was the primary resource for RPP’s connection to the Eskom grid, and I was responsible for all grid related matters concerning the RPPs, including grid code compliance. As an Electrical Grid Engineer, I was part of the juwi EMEA engineering team, supporting the engineering, procurement, project management and new business teams with electrical engineering analysis, design, modelling, costing and commissioning.

I have since joined EDF Renewables as Grid Manager. In this role, I am the lead for all Grid related issues for all our projects during the Development, Execution and Commercial Operation phases. I am expected to take lead in issues such as; Grid Code Compliance, Substation development and construction, liaising with Utilities(Eskom, Municipalities) with matters related to the interconnection, monitoring the project implementation progress and support with the resolution of all grid related issues. I am responsible for the development of a process road map for the execution of the Grid interconnection portion of the RPPs (in South Africa and the sub-Saharan region), including required deliverables, expected timeframes, and expected roles and responsibilities of stakeholders.

My main objective as a Grid Manager is to ensure that our plants are connected into the National Grid (within budget and expected timeframe) and remain complaint to all the network requirements outlined by the Utility(Eskom, Municipalities, network owners).
